Overview

In the PGY2 year, residents spend three weeks at a community-based site in Idaho providing primary care and rural hospital medicine.  This community-based rotation ranks among our residents' favorites and often leads to job opportunities upon graduation.

Sites & Community Attractions

Boise: VA Medical Center, St. Luke's Health System, Saint Alphonsus Medical Center

Boise, the "City of Trees", is a growing city located on the Boise River and amongst the foothills offering endless outdoor recreation. It is the home of the Boise State University Broncos, Boise Hawks baseball team, and the Idaho Steelheads hockey team. The Boise River Greenbelt stretches 25 miles through the middle of the city following the Boise River inviting runners, walkers, cyclists, and other activities along the trail.

Cour d'Alene: Kootenai Clinic

The city of Coeur d'Alene offers endless outdoor activities such as 55 lakes for boating and cruises, float planes, and golfing on the world's only floating golf green. White water rafting, ziplines, parasailing, hiking, and the largest theme park in the northwest. The city also offers many historic museums and mining tours, spas, excellent dining and nightlife.

Fruitland: St. Luke's Clinic Family Medicine

Fruitland sits between the Payette and Snake Rivers. The area is surrounded by many fruit orchards and offers water sports, motor sports, hunting, fishing, and camping.

Sandpoint: Internal Medicine Associates

Sandpoint is surrounded by three mountain ranges and Pend Oreille, Idaho's largest lake. Idaho's largest ski resort, Schweitzer Mountain Resort, is about 12 miles from the city. The nearly two-mile long bridge crossing the Pend Oreille River provides a fun entrance to a city with an interesting history. Sail on the Windbag Marina, play in the sand at City Beach, hike the many trails, and enjoy the music and events of the Festival at Sandpoint and the annual Fall Fest at Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

Seattle: University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Puget Sound VA Medical Center

Seattle, "The Emerald City", is a seaport city surrounded by the Puget Sound inlet of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Washington.  Seattle offers an array of rich culture and history.  Experience the Space Needle, shop at Pike Place Market, or ride the Bainbridge Island Ferry.   Visit the many art and history museums, the Woodland Park Zoo, or the Seattle Aquarium.  If you enjoy sporting events, catch a Seahawks or Mariners game.

Sun Valley: St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center

Sun Valley is a resort town attractive for not only the ski mountains but also the annual Sun Valley Film Festival. While in Sun Valley, enjoy the hiking and biking trails, and many other mountain activities, as well as golf greens, fly fising, skiing, and ice shows. Sun Valley is also known as an attractive "get away" destination for many celebrities.

Twin Falls: St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center

Twin falls is home of the beautiful Shoshone Falls, known as the "Niagara of the West."  Shoshone falls flows into the Snake River where locals and tourists enjoy kayaking, white water rafting, boating, and other water sports.  The Snake River flows through the Snake River Canyon expanding more than fifty miles where you'll find BASE Jumpers year-round. The surrounding area also offers hunting, fishing, camping, and hot springs. Besides the many attractions and activities that Twin Falls has to offer, it is also home of the College of Southern Idaho which offers a wide variety of educational opportunities.
