Starting in July 2011, our residency became a second Internal Medicine residency under the University of Washington (UW) umbrella. We are separate from the UW Seattle and UW Alaska Residencies.
Located in Boise, ID, we have training sites at all three of the major Boise hospitals (Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center) and at office-based practices in Boise and other cities throughout Idaho. Additionally, residents are able to choose elective rotations in Seattle, WA, during the PGY2 and PGY3 years.
For Academic Year 2026-2027, we will be recruiting four PGY1s for the Preliminary track of our program, and twelve PGY1s for the Categorical track (sixteen positions total).
Although the bulk of our residency activities are accomplished in Boise, ID, some administrative tasks (e.g. payroll, benefits, malpractice insurance) for our program are handled through the University of Washington Graduate Medical Education office in Seattle, WA.
Applications
Applications for the 2026-2027 Academic Year will be accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) starting September 2025.
We will send interview invitations in a rolling manner beginning October 2025. Please apply no later than November 17, 2025, to ensure we have sufficient time to consider your application thoroughly. We anticipate sending the last interview invitations by November 20, 2025.
All intern positions will be filled through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
Interviews
We will interview applicants beginning October 28, 2025 through December 17, 2025.
All Applicants
We have no specific USMLE or COMLEX score cutoff. If you have ties to Idaho or to the Northwest or Mountain West region, please be sure to include them in your application.
Our program director and selection committee will consider your entire application, regardless of where you attended medical school.
International Medical School Graduates
- We will need your ECFMG certificate by January 2026 and proof of U.S. Citizenship or Green Card at the time of application.
- You must have graduated from medical school within the last five years.
- Your medical school must be one recognized by the Idaho State Board of Medicine so that you can be licensed in Idaho. Please refer to "Rules for Licensure to Practice Medicine and Surgery and Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Idaho" (see Administrative Code IDAPA 22.01.01, section 051).
- We require at least six months of clinical experience in the United States or a western medical system. However, please be sure to include any and all of your clinical or research experience in your application even though it might have been outside the United States.
- Letters of recommendation are important and must be from a doctor in the U.S.
Externships and Observerships
Unfortunately, for those interested in an externship or observership, current Veteran’s Affairs (VA) policy precludes us from being able to offer any externships or observerships to anyone who is not currently enrolled in a program directly affiliated with the VA.
